Fox Talbot’s salt printing process can be used with modern film and digital negatives to produce beautiful prints on fine watercolour papers. These prints have a great range of tone in deep warm browns. Salt prints were popular until the early 1850s. They were replaced by albumen printing where the light sensitive salts are carried in a layer of albumen on the surface of the paper. We will prepare the chemicals and coat the paper. Prints will be made from negatives made on the workshop or those brought by students. We will also take photographs on large format cameras and develop the negatives for salt and albumen prints. Salt and Albumen both need two coats, one of salt and one of silver nitrate. The Van Dyke process was one the earliest to require one coat.
